Boston Shootings Injure Five

April 23 was a bloody night for Boston residents, who saw five injuries due to neighborhood gunfire.

The first shooting occurred in front of a YMCA; three men were injured. The second two victims were standing near a car on a streetcorner when they were shot.

"As much as we like to think we have all of these eyes out there, it's not enough. We need the people in the community," said Police Superintendent John Gallagher. "We want to put a stop to this. We need everyone's help to put a stop to it."

Levee Fall Injures Pregnant Woman

A pregnant woman is in uncertain condition after a 15-foot fall down an embankment of a Colorado river levee.

Fireman Robby Rodriguez reported that rescue workers worked in sand up to their ankles to rescue the woman, who was alert but in extreme pain. Not many other details are known about the woman or why she was on the levee; Border Patrol officials were involved, but there is no word on the woman's residency.

It was supposed to be a happy day. But Michelle L. Bowers' eighth birthday ended in tragedy when she was struck and killed by an oncoming train near the the Youghiogheny River in South Connellsville, PA.

"It is very tragic," said an investigator. "Given everything that I've learned, there was nothing the engineer could have done." The girl's mother, who was also struck by the train, is in critical condition.

Pit Bulls Injure Florida Teen

Two pit bulls reportedly attacked a Palm Bay, Florida teenager as she walked home from her bus stop, authorities report.

The dogs were impounded; the victim suffered bites, scratches and lacerations but was not seriously injured. The owner of the dogs, who is 19 years old, claimed the dogs were usually kept in a fenced area, but jumped out when they saw the victim.

Employers may soon be urging staff to hit the gym: a recent study has linked heavy employees to two times as many workers' compensation injuries as their thinner counterparts.

The study, which was conducted at Duke University, focused on a possible link between the BMIs of workers and their workers' compensation claims. Compiled over eight years, statistics showed that obese employees had up to 13 times more lost workdays because of work-related injuries, and the cost of medical claims for their workplace injuries were seven times higher than their fit co-workers.

Florida Juvenile Justice Unit Faces Tough Questions Over Abuse Accusations

The acting superintendent and a juvenile justice officer at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida have been fired after abuse accusations.

The incident involved an 18-year-old resident who accused juvenile justice residential officer Alvin Speights of knocking him unconscious while choking him. While the resident is charged with assault, the facility has been plagued in the past with battery and even aggravated manslaughter in other incidents.

"There are systemic operational problems at our Dozier facility that span the chain of command from top to bottom," said Walt McNeil, the secretary of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice. He cited the firings as part of ongoing moves to change the culture at Dozier.

An autopsy has revealed that the 49-year-old Nevada man who crashed his small plane last week died of head wounds.

The man died of blunt force trauma to the head and multiple fractures; though he was wearing a seat belt, he did not survive the crash, though a passenger made it through alive.
