FDA Announces Recall Information Pilot Program

The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a six-month pilot program to better educate consumers about recalled food products. The program, which was announced in the wake of the Peter Pan peanut butter recall and associated salmonella outbreak, will aim to help consumers identify recalled food products by giving them photographs of the recalled items.

The pilot program will include recalled items that are suspected to have a life-threatening effect; it will cover potential class I (reasonable probability that use of the product will lead to severe health consequences or death) and some class II recalls. There have been an average of 188 class I food recalls per year over the last five years.
