High Rate of Corneal Implants Associated with ReNu MoistureLoc

A recent Journal of the American Medical Association found that one-third of patients who had a severe eye infection associated with ReNu with MoistureLoc had such severe infections that they would need corneal implants. PR Leap reports that Bausch & Lomb argues that the infection in these patients was due to the fact that the patients did not adequately clean their lenses and change the storage solution.
Paul J. Pennock, director of the legal firm representing the injured parties, responded to Bausch & Lomb with the following: “Adding insult to injury is the recent campaign by Bausch & Lomb in print and television media, which focuses on improper use of the product, seemingly seeking to shift the blame and portray infected users as responsible. The findings of this study put that theory to rest,” Pennock added.

The JAMA study found that the rare fungus, Fusarium keratitis, which caused the need for corneal implants in the affected patients, was the result of ReNu with MoistureLoc.

Accutane and IBD linked

A study has been conducted that confirms what long had been suspected: Isotretinoin, better known as Accutane, increases risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease. While a link had long been suspected, this is the first study that establishes a correlation. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Physicians and patients should be made aware of this possible association and it should be included in the already extensive consent process required before isotretinoin is prescribed," the investigators write. A complete ban of isotretinoin is not recommended; however, a review of a candidate's family health history might be in order to decide if the increased risk is worth taking.
